GRANBURY
      "We begin with a destination that's a short drive from anywhere in the Metroplex (35 miles south of Fort Worth). And, this adventure includes the most wonderful B&B experience we've ever had, at a place called Captain's House on the Lake Historic Bed & Breakfast. Granbury boasts of being "a town where Texas history lives" and Captain's House (ranked one of the top 15 B&Bs in North America for hospitality by Arrington's Bed & Breakfast Journal, first among B&Bs in Granbury by tripadvisor.com and Top 5 Most Romantic in Texas by AAA Travel Magazine) is a great example of why. It's a beautiful Victorian home built by one of the founding fathers of Granbury, James H. Doyle, a Confederate Civil War hero affectionately known as "Captain." The proprietor is a wonderful Christian woman named Liz. They've lovingly restored the old home and a stay with Liz truly transports one back in time to a slower and friendlier place. Liz greets new arrivals in period costume from the late 1800s with peach tea and strawberry shortcake. Visitors enjoy their choice of breakfast in bed or on the back balcony overlooking Lake Granbury. And, each of the rooms is decorated with museum quality antiques. Our favorite is the Mary Kate Doyle Suite with its California king-size bed and handmade turn-of-the-century furniture. All the suites have kitchens and full baths and great views. If you're staying in the Mary Kate Doyle Suite you are also sleeping where Bonnie & Clyde slept. Ask about the story. It's an interesting one.
      There are more than twenty B&Bs in Granbury and a lot of other reasons to spend some time there. Captain's House is just a two-block stroll from Granbury's Historic Square, where some of the original buildings survive, many constructed in the 1800s. Today the Courthouse Square is graced by antique shops and wonderful live entertainment at the Opera House, with live musicals, and Granbury Live, with nostalgic shows from the early days of Rock and Roll. There's also an old fashioned drive-in movie theatre in Granbury showing first run movies. Others will come for water sports on Lake Granbury and a cruise on a paddle-wheel riverboat with musical entertainment, fine dining and murder mystery theatre.
      There is much history here. Davy Crockett's widow lived and taught school in Granbury. Some claim the real Jesse James lived and died there. And, the real John Wilkes Booth as well. There are legends and myths and verifiable history, And Granbury celebrates many of them with annual festivals.
